I heard the option to buy things with your mobile phone in the past, very touching as a bit ‘eccentric whim of gender. Well it seems that the idea of buying equipment with a mobile device is not as off the wall as it once was.
I just knew that Visa has not officially announced that the technology is coming to the iPhone hit pay. With the option of password protection, one might argue that this takes more security than using the age old “ask for ID” methods on the back of the card.
But I still have concerns with respect to whether DeviceFidelity will be able to provide the level of security that will keep us safe should a company become a problem. While it is true that credit cards provide some ‘layer of liability protection, debit cards are very much a wildcard with banks on the front of responsibility.
And if your iPhone has taken plastic? Imagine if your business could use it as a processor of credit card mobile, a question-and-go scheme for telephone payments anywhere you wander.
Three companies are developing rival betting heavy on that vision, bringing to market three different magnetic stripe readers this year for use with Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) Contact iPhone and iPod. They are fighting one another for the hearts – and wallets – of furniture wholesalers, promising an improvement over the minions have wired terminal credit card that has been a staple of commerce and brick mortar for decades.
“Our only concern is that we can put this in the hands of people quickly enough,” says Jack Dorsey twitter co-founder and president, who discovered his new startup, honestly, in December. Dorsey says that the company will release its readers credit card shaped tiny square – roughly the size of individual quarter – earlier this summer.
The square has been accumulating wads of cash – $ 10 one million in venture capital so far, batting second in line Crunchbase.com – and assembling a host of big name of angel investors, including Marissa Mayer, vice president for search products at Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) and Kevin Rose, founder of Digg. (The company also announced an advisory role, including, rather bafflingly, Alyssa Milano of “Who is the” famous “Big” and “Charmed.”)
The square has some ‘serious competition. Last week, VeriFone (PAY), the leading global provider of electronic payment systems, launched a ship called the iPhone a sleeve-Mobile payware credit card swiper. Mophie And, a manufacturer of iPhone case, plans to release its own device for payment, the market in late March.
All three companies are shooting the same objective: not hobble workforce.
The hardware of the square is in the hands of a small group of testers, including flight instructors, piano teachers, flower vendors, food cart owners, sellers Craigslist and the people who work at the San Francisco Coffee sightglass, where Dorsey is an investor.
Who else might want to use a credit card reader mobile?
“The guy who comes to your house to detail your car, the repairman who comes to fix a broken faucet, the person who sells you a piece of art and sell perhaps only two or three a week,” suggests Douglas Bergeron, CEO VeriFone.
Ross Howe, director of sales growth and product Mophie said quickly as possible. “Your employer, your plumber, your limousine driver, your wedding photography,” he offers. “There are not many wholesalers will acquire – individuals or small owners – businesses that have a hard time taking credit cards.”
The battlefield
The wholesalers were certainly other options the iPhone. They may, for example, use applications such as Pro InnerFence, iMerchant and throw it, which accepts credit card numbers entered by hand. The downside? The wholesalers generally pay higher fees because it has only payments, which are known in the industry as “not entered” transactions “current” and are more vulnerable to fraud. “You can throw many more credit cards during the day when you enter it,” says Howe, speaking Marketplace Mophie.
Despite the parallel goals of companies, their products will look – and act – rather differently.
The payware Mobile swiper VeriFone resembles an iPhone case with a card slot that runs along the side. Users pay a fee of $ 49 and under an additional $ 15 per month over the course of a service contract for two years. They can expect to pull out about 17 cents per transaction, along with trading fees that are taxed by banks crediting of paper.
Bergeron, VeriFone’s CEO, is counting on his company’s long history in the arena of credit card payment. And he is not afraid to take a whack at it up and people coming. “Unlike some of the gadgets that have been proposed, which have been in this business for 30 years,” he says. “Our name is synonymous with safety. VeriFone brand is to treat credit cards like Kleenex is to tissue paper.
Ross Howe Mophie to take more of an aesthetic approach. “We’ve been in business cases beautiful, attractive, intriguing for the iPhone for a long time,” he says.
The Market Mophie takes the form of an iPhone case with a card slot that runs along the bottom of the phone. The hardware will cost under $ 200 and is compatible with many applications already existed for payment for the iPhone, says Howe. “We want to have fun with everybody,” he says.
A rough size of a quarter, hardware Square is small enough to hang on to a keychain and connects the audio jack of a telephone. A magnetic strip reader converts paper information into a series of audio tones that become cracked software iPhone Square. Because all phones have audio jacks, the reader will be compatible with Square and other Android smartphones soon as the company develops software that corresponds, according to Jack Dorsey, the Square is the CEO.
Dorsey plans to deploy the hardware else and make Money on individual transactions, though there be no pricing structure in place yet. Unlike its two competitors, the Square does not ask users to open individual accounts with commercial banks.
“Signing for Square is an argument to place your name and address and your image” that “our system,” Dorsey says. “What we’re trying to do is remove friction from every part of the process.”
It is the friction with the competition. Asked how he planned to address Mophie and VeriFone, Dorsey said that his company is deeply entrusted to provide “a truly well designed.”
“We’re not to compete with each other,” he says. “The hardware is not our business.”
